How We Classify Program Delivery Formats
Every Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (AGACNP) program on this site is labeled with one of four delivery formats: Online, Mostly Online, Hybrid, or Campus. This page explains what each label means and how we decide which one a program gets, so you can judge whether a program fits your work schedule, your travel limits, and your life.
Our guiding rule is simple: we classify programs by how students actually attend, not by the marketing word a school uses. Terms like “hybrid,” “blended,” “flexible,” and “distance” are used loosely across nursing schools and often mean very different things. We read past the label to the real attendance requirement.
The Four Formats
Online
All classroom coursework is completed online. There are no required visits to campus. You complete your clinical hours locally, with a preceptor in your own area. If a program states it is fully online and lists no mandatory campus event, we label it Online.
Mostly Online
Coursework is delivered online, but the program requires a limited, countable number of on-campus visits — an orientation, a skills lab, a simulation intensive, or a residency weekend. The key feature is that these visits are occasional and finite: you are not expected on campus on a regular weekly schedule. Examples include “one on-campus orientation,” “three intensives across the program,” or “two skills days per year.”
Hybrid
Students attend campus on a regular, recurring schedule — weekly, every other week, or monthly — throughout part or all of the program. This is a genuine ongoing time and travel commitment, not a one-time visit. A program requiring “one day per week on campus” or “a three-day campus block every month” is Hybrid.
Campus
Most coursework is completed in person, on campus, as the primary mode of instruction. These are traditional face-to-face programs. They tend to suit students who live near the school and can attend regularly.
The Distinction That Matters Most
The line between Mostly Online and Hybrid is the one prospective students ask about most, so it is worth stating plainly.
- A finite set of campus visits — for example, a single orientation, one immersion per term, or a handful of skills labs across the whole program — is Mostly Online. You can plan around a known number of trips.
- A recurring, scheduled obligation — attending class in person every week, every other week, or every month — is Hybrid. It reshapes your routine for the length of the program.
We draw the line this way because the practical impact on your life is different. A program that asks you to visit campus twice is a manageable ask for a working nurse in another state. A program that expects you every Wednesday is not.
Clinicals Are Not a Delivery-Format Factor
Every AGACNP program, regardless of format, requires in-person clinical hours completed with a preceptor in a real acute care setting. Because this is true of all programs — even fully online ones — we do not treat clinical placement as part of the delivery format. A program is not “less online” because it has clinicals; every program has them. Our labels describe only how the classroom coursework is delivered.
Different Tracks Can Have Different Formats
Many schools offer more than one AGACNP pathway — an MSN, a BSN-to-DNP, and a post-master’s certificate. These tracks do not always share the same delivery format. A school’s DNP might require monthly campus attendance (Hybrid) while its certificate is fully online. When tracks differ, we classify and note them separately so you are comparing the specific pathway you plan to enter.
How We Handle Missing or Unclear Information
Some program pages state their delivery format clearly; others do not. When a school’s official materials are vague or silent on campus attendance, we say so rather than guess. Where a classification is based on limited information, we note that it should be verified directly with the school. We never invent a requirement that a program does not state, and we never assume a program is more (or less) flexible than its own materials indicate.
Because schools update their programs, always confirm the current delivery format — and any campus-visit requirements — with the program directly before applying.

We ask one question of every program: what does a student actually have to do to attend? If the answer is “nothing on campus,” it is Online. If it is “a few visits,” it is Mostly Online. If it is “show up on a regular schedule,” it is Hybrid. If it is “attend in person as the main way you learn,” it is Campus.
