West Coast University markets eight-week terms with start dates throughout the year, but California applicants enter through a capped Board of Registered Nursing selection process with two annual starts and one-month application windows. Every track requires a year of ICU experience within the past five years, including the post-master’s certificate.

Requirements Shared Across All Tracks
All three tracks run the same MSNA specialty sequence, the same practicum courses, and the same clinical and campus rules. Only credits, entry credential, and cost differ.
Clinical Requirements
- Total hours: 540 precepted clinical hours, effective Fall I 2024 (previously 500)
- Distribution: five practicum courses totaling 12 credits, which works out to 45 clock hours per practicum credit
- Setting: acute care hospital settings, per the nurse practitioner student handbook
- Who finds the site: the student identifies the preceptor and site; a Coordinator of Clinical Relations reviews, vets, and processes the affiliation agreement
- Application deadline: 16 weeks before each practicum course, submitted separately every term even when the site and preceptor do not change
- Employer placements: permitted, but the rotation must be in a different setting from the student’s usual role, outside normal working hours, and under a preceptor who is not their supervisor
- Disqualified preceptors: supervisors, direct reports, relatives, roommates, and friends. Hours logged with them are rejected
- Shadowing: observation hours stop counting after the second week of a term
You Should Know
- Employment does not solve placement: working in an ICU does not let a student precept on that unit or during scheduled shifts. A second site, or at minimum a different service and off-shift schedule, is required.
- Approval is not guaranteed: hours logged before written approval arrives by WCU email can be denied, and a missing clinical affiliation agreement can delay a term.
Campus Requirements
- Number: two mandatory on-site intensive weekends, each two days
- Location: tied to the campus of enrollment. Orange County enrollees attend in California, Texas enrollees in Richardson
- Purpose: hands-on skills demonstration with high-fidelity simulators and standardized patients
- Cost: travel and lodging are not included in tuition or fees

You Should Know
- Missing an intensive fails the course: a student who does not attend receives a non-passing grade and must retake the entire course to progress. Partial attendance earns no credit.
RN Experience and Licensure
- ICU requirement: one year of intensive care unit experience as an RN within the past five years, required before admission and verified on an experience form
- General experience: one year of direct patient care RN experience, required before entering APRN core courses rather than at application
- Licensure: an unencumbered RN license in the state where the student completes all coursework and practicum hours, maintained throughout the program
- Relocation: students agree to complete clinical hours in the state where they resided at enrollment. Moving to a state WCU is not authorized in can end eligibility to graduate
You Should Know
- WCU publishes no state authorization list: program pages and the catalog both say distance programs may not be available to residents of all states, without naming which. Eligibility has to be established with an admissions advisor before applying.
MSN – AGACNP
The estimated total cost for the MSN AGACNP track is $49,217 on the accelerated pace and $50,717 on the working professional pace, effective Fall I 2026. The program takes 20 months across five trimesters, or 32 months across eight.
Pace is selected at enrollment and determines course load, not curriculum. Accelerated students generally attempt two courses per term; working professional students attempt one.

MSN Admissions
- Degree: BSN from an ACEN-, CCNE-, or CNEA-accredited program with a 3.0 GPA or better
- Transcripts: conditional admission on unofficial transcripts is possible; official transcripts are due by the end of add/drop
- Review: recommendation by the program dean and admission committee, scored against a rubric
- Gap analysis: required upon admission for all MSN APRN tracks
- Supplemental form: required in addition to the university application
You Should Know
- California intakes are capped and dated: the Board of Registered Nursing limits APRN enrollment, so California applicants apply September 1 to October 1 for a January start, or December 1 to January 1 for a March start. Incomplete applications are rejected after seven business days.
RN to MSN – AGACNP
The estimated total cost for the RN to MSN AGACNP track is $57,867 accelerated and $59,867 working professional. Completion runs 28 months across seven trimesters, or 44 months across eleven.
This is the route for nurses holding an associate degree or diploma rather than a BSN. Acute care specialization is rarely open at that entry point.
RN to MSN Curriculum
The degree is recorded as 155 credits, but only 65 are taken at WCU. The remainder is awarded credit: up to 48 for college-level non-nursing coursework and the balance for unobstructed RN licensure.

RN to MSN Admissions
- Degree: associate degree or diploma in nursing from an accredited institution with a 3.0 cumulative GPA or better
- Acute care gate: one year of critical care or intensive care experience within the past five years, required prior to admission
- Transfer: up to 90 credits accepted, of which up to 48 cover non-nursing coursework
- Missing transfer credit: applicants short of the 48 non-nursing credits may close the gap through CLEP, DSST, AP, IB, ACE, NCCRS, or challenge exams
- California pharmacology: a student approved to transfer advanced pharmacology must still pass the California BRN pharmacology modules
Post-Master’s Certificate – AGACNP
The estimated total cost for the AGACNP post-master’s certificate is $31,090. It takes 16 months across four trimesters.
The 29-credit certificate is the MSN’s MSNA specialty sequence exactly, minus the three advanced practice core courses and the MSN core. Clinical hours, practicum courses, on-site intensives, and the ICU requirement match the shared section above.
Certificate Admissions
- Degree: MSN or DNP from an ACEN-, CCNE-, or CNEA-accredited program with a 3.0 GPA or better
- 3P currency: advanced pathophysiology, pharmacology, and health assessment must be under five years old with a grade of B or better
- Gap analysis: a formal transfer-credit gap analysis is completed before admission is accepted, and can raise the credit count
- Non-transferable: APRN specialty coursework is never accepted for transfer and must be completed at WCU
- Population-specific 3Ps: courses such as advanced pediatric assessment or advanced psychopharmacology do not transfer
- Foreign degrees: applicants with nursing degrees earned outside the United States are not considered for any post-master’s NP certificate
- Prior dismissal: applicants dismissed from a previous WCU nurse practitioner track do not qualify
You Should Know
- A PMHNP or leadership MSN can add courses: applicants whose master’s focused on education, leadership, or informatics must complete the three APRN core courses before starting the specialty sequence, above the published 29 credits.
Tuition
West Coast University bills by course type rather than a single graduate rate. Effective Fall I 2026, APRN core courses cost $850 per credit, MSN core courses $721, and RN to MSN BSN core courses $510.
The certificate is billed at $810 per credit under the Summer II 2025 schedule, which WCU has not updated to match the Fall I 2026 APRN rate.

Mandatory fees add substantially and are published per track. A clinical program fee of $3,465 and a supplies and licensure preparation fee of $2,300 apply to every track. The technology fee varies by track and pace, running $2,000 for the certificate up to $5,500 for the RN to MSN on the working professional pace.
The slower pace costs more for the same credits. Choosing working professional over accelerated adds $1,500 to the MSN and $2,000 to the RN to MSN, entirely through the technology fee. Tuition itself is identical.
Be aware that:
- Published totals exclude clinical travel: intensives, site travel, parking, background checks, immunizations, and liability requirements fall outside the figures above.
- Rates moved recently: the APRN core rate rose from $810 to $850 and the clinical fee from $3,300 to $3,465 effective Fall I 2026. Older third-party listings still carry the prior totals.
Financial aid
WCU offers institutional awards that apply to nursing tuition, including an Alumni Pathway Grant of up to 20 percent, a Health Services Grant of up to 10 percent, and a Performance Scholarship of up to 15 percent. Why Choose This ACNP Program?
- Acute care from an associate degree. The RN to MSN track admits diploma and ADN nurses directly into the AGACNP specialty, awarding up to 90 credits for prior coursework and licensure. Most acute care programs require a BSN at entry.
- The certificate is the specialty sequence, unbundled. An MSN-prepared nurse pays $31,090 for the identical MSNA courses and 540 clinical hours the degree students complete.
- Two paces, one curriculum. Students choose 20 or 32 months at enrollment without changing courses, credits, or clinical requirements.
- Eight-week terms compress the calendar. Courses run in short blocks rather than semesters, which is what makes a 50-credit master’s fit into five trimesters.
- Cohort screened for ICU background. Every classmate has cleared the same one-year ICU requirement, so specialty coursework starts from a shared floor of critical care experience.
This suits an experienced ICU nurse who wants a distance program with a fixed pace, and particularly an ADN-prepared one with few other acute care routes. Nurses who need year-round entry, or who cannot arrange a practicum outside their own unit and shift, should look elsewhere.
Accreditation and Certification
The baccalaureate, master’s, Doctor of Nursing Practice, and post-graduate APRN certificate programs at West Coast University are accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education. Naming the post-graduate certificate program separately matters, because ANCC requires certificate holders to have completed an accredited post-graduate APRN program.
The post-graduate certificate in nursing additionally holds initial accreditation from the National League for Nursing Commission for Nursing Education Accreditation.
West Coast University is institutionally accredited by the WASC Senior College and University Commission. As a private postsecondary institution in California, it also operates under the Bureau for Private Postsecondary Education, which publishes school performance fact sheets by campus.
All three tracks carry an adult-gerontology acute care population focus. Graduates are eligible to sit for the ANCC Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner certification examination or the AACN ACNPC-AG examination. California graduates seeking furnishing authority may need additional advanced pharmacology coursework or continuing education under Board of Registered Nursing rules.
